What Is the RBT Competency Assessment?

The Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) Competency Assessment is a practical test that shows you can apply what you learned in your 40-hour training. It’s a required step to become an RBT.


Who Conducts the Assessment?

Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) or Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA) who has completed 8 hours of supervision training will guide and evaluate you during the assessment.


When Should You Complete the Assessment?

  • After Training: Finish your 40-hour training first.
  • Timing: Complete the assessment within 90 days before applying for the RBT exam.

What Does the Assessment Involve?

You’ll demonstrate your skills in these areas:

  1. Measurement: Show you can track and record behaviors accurately.
  2. Assessment: Conduct preference assessments and collect ABC (Antecedent-Behavior-Consequence) data.
  3. Skill Acquisition: Teach new skills using techniques like discrete trial teaching and chaining.
