What Is the RBT Competency Assessment?
The Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) Competency Assessment is a practical test that shows you can apply what you learned in your 40-hour training. It’s a required step to become an RBT.
Who Conducts the Assessment?
A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) or Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA) who has completed 8 hours of supervision training will guide and evaluate you during the assessment.
When Should You Complete the Assessment?
- After Training: Finish your 40-hour training first.
- Timing: Complete the assessment within 90 days before applying for the RBT exam.
What Does the Assessment Involve?
You’ll demonstrate your skills in these areas:
- Measurement: Show you can track and record behaviors accurately.
- Assessment: Conduct preference assessments and collect ABC (Antecedent-Behavior-Consequence) data.
- Skill Acquisition: Teach new skills using techniques like discrete trial teaching and chaining.
- Behavior Reduction: Use strategies to decrease challenging behaviors.
- Documentation: Write clear session notes.
- Professionalism: Maintain client dignity, set boundaries, and follow ethical guidelines.
How Is the Assessment Conducted?

What Happens After the Assessment?
